Taken along Granville Street, Spring 1970, showing (l-r) my dad Joseph, myself and my brother Zoltan. My brother at the time was a high school teacher in Midway, B.C. One of his practices was to award year-end prizes to top students in the subjects he taught (French and Social Studies); invariably these awards took the form of an LP record by one of the top acts of the day. We had just finished shopping at Glenn’s Records and Tapes and were probably on our way to Ted Fraser’s Book Bin (another of my brother’s regular stops) when Foncie captured us. I still remember some of the titles in that bag of records under my brother’s left arm: Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Waters and the just released solo debut by Paul McCartney. And being the kind big brother that he was (and still is), he bought me a record too which I’m thinking was either by The Archies or The Monkees. The three of us shared many outtings in those days; in hindsight, the trips were probably a good excuse to get us out of the house . . and my mother’s hair . . for an afternoon. Those were magical days in my wonder years and I’m eternally grateful to Foncie for freezing one such moment for all time.
