16 year-old David Yamaura and friend Tad (short for Tadashi) Nagao on Hastings Street. Despite their sharp outfits, they were actually on “leave” from Hastings Park, where they and thousands of other Japanese Canadians were separated from their families and forced to stay in deplorable conditions. Though they were both born and raised in Maple Ridge, they were labeled as “Enemy Aliens.” Shortly after this, David was shipped off to an internment camp in Slocan, BC. His brothers were sent to a labour camp in Ontario. Tad and his family were shipped to Slocan, but eventually ended up in Lemon Creek. David’s family returned to the coast in 1949 when restrictions were finally lifted.
