When Grandpa tried to enlist, he was told he was too old, but if he spoke Japanese he’d be signed up in an instant. Grandfather said, well sign me up! He was fluent in Japanese & stationed on Yorke Island for the duration of the war, intercepting radio transmissions from Japanese subs, & translating the messages for Ottawa. Father was stationed in England & later Bella Bella.
