Joe was our neighbourhood barber. His little barbershop was on Dunbar Street a block north of the Dunbar theatre. It was always known as Joe’s barbershop by everyone. My dad and I used to get our hair cut by Joe; in 1968 it was $1.50 for my dad and 50 cents for me. I’d wait for my turn reading through the many, many Marvel comics and trying to sneak a peak at the old Playboys at the bottom of the magazine pile. I miss old Joe and his immaculate ’52 Cadillac he never sold, and sitting in his shop on a warm Saturday afternoon listening to our dads discuss baseball or football or Dunbar gossip. A developer kicked Joe out of the shop long, long after he became a Dunbar institution… too much of that going on now.

Thanks for your comment Bobby. Everyone knew my dad as Joe the Barber, even when we moved to White Rock in ’88. He passed away in 2011.

Hey Bobby, thanks for the nice comments about my dad, like my sister said he died in 2011 at 91, he was still cutting hair right up until he passed, yes he was famous for the old green Caddy, do you have a photo on this site?

I used to live 3 houses behind Joe’s barber shop on w 29th ave. 4 boys in the family all visited Joe’s barber shop during the 60’s and 70’s. I got to know Joe very well and always enjoyed our long talks even when I wasn’t getting a hair cut…he was a first class guy. I was wondering if at all possible to get some pics to remember Joe by. Especially if someone had a pic of him and his awesome shinny green 54 Caddy and one of him in his barber shop. I once saw a video of him being interviewed but cant find it on google. Thanks and look forward to hearing from you
