My mother-in-law was on her lunch break and went to Inglis Reid, the butchers across the street from where she worked at Woolworths as a cashier. She and her husband emigrated from the UK in 1958. My family and theirs met, and several years later I married their son, Ronald. Later we found out we’d left for Canada on the same day, but different ships!

James Inglis Reid: “We hae meat that ye can eat” There was also a sign about “Founded in 1898” or “in the previous century.” What a wonderful place that was. Sawdust on the floors, massively thick marble shelves on iron brackets… the wonderful smells… My mother’s parents shopped there in the 30s and my mum from the 40’s and I shopped there from the ’70s until it went the way of so many good, old things. I still think they had the very best smoked bacon.
