I came out to Canada in 1950. Traveled to Toronto where I worked for nine months. I answered an advertisment in the paper for drivers to ferry GM cars from the factory in Oshawa to Dueck’s dealership in Vancouver. We were allowed 3,500 miles and if I remember correctly, 10 days for delivery.
The route I chose was to travel through the States. In Vancouver I stayed with family friends on SW Marine Drive. They had a son about my age and he introduced me to Dorothy, who was staying in a boarding house on Alma Street with his girlfriend and four other girls.
I got a job with Northern Construction Co, who were building a power house at Bridal Falls. Dorothy finished her course and went to stay with her sister and grandfather in Abbotsford, before going home to Yorkton, Saskachewan. So I was able to visit her on weekends.
This picture was taken on Granville Street in the winter of 1951. It is difficult to believe, looking at the expressions on our faces, that we were to be married in May 1952 in Yorkton!
We had a wonderful life together for 56 years. Dorothy died at our home in Saanichton in May 2008.
